The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’. According to a press release by the World AIDS Campaign the theme has been chosen to address the critical need to protect human rights and attain access for all to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. It also acts as a call to countries to remove laws that discriminate against people living with HIV, women and marginalized groups.

human rights

This article elaborates about the best ways to serve the reproductive health and other needs of sex workers. It argues that the human rights of sex workers are routinely violated and explains why projects with sex workers must go beyond public health orientated HIV prevention to include structural interventions that address human rights and law. An article by Wolffers I and Van Beelen N. in The Lancet, 2003 Jun 7;361(9373):1981. This article is by  Loff, B. Gaze, B. and Fairley, C. from The Lancet, Volume 356, Issue 9243, Pages 1764-1764. An ID21 Insights edited by Susie Jolly. What do sexuality and policy have to do with each other? Is not sexuality personal, private, and more to do with your body than your politics? Of course on one level it is. However, if we consider our sexual relations in a little more depth, we discover that the terms for them are set by policies and politics, including social norms and gender dynamics, national policies and international relations. Making Sex Work Safe was developed by sex workers from the early International Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP). It was written by Paulo

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day provides us with an opportunity for reflection – to remember those who we have lost and to look forward, to consider what still needs to be done if we are to tackle HIV. In terms of scientific advances and political commitment this year has been a very mixed bag. This World AIDS day feels different to all others.  It has felt like the end of AIDS is in sight for some time now but after 30 years with so much hope and so many false alarms the wise have learned not to get excited by each announcement

This paper examines the position of prostitutes (and of ex-prostitutes and women seen to behave ‘like prostitutes’) in reported rape trials in Britain, Australia and Canada over the last 150 years. It suggests sex workers suffer a high incidence of sexual assault and asserts that until recently, it was almost impossible for sex workers to seek justice for these crimes. Charges of rape made by sex workers were often not taken seriously by the police and courts. A framework of sex work related laws by The Law & Policy Project at Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. Few systematic accounts

Sex Work and the Law: the Case for Decriminalisation

This report  argues that decriminalisation of sex work is as much a public health issue as an HIV and AIDS prevention issue. It outlines several key issues, considerations, challenges and recommendations for policy-makers, NGOs, sex workers and other actors in the fields of HIV and human rights, to help build a supportive and enabling environment for sex workers to realise their rights. Decriminalisation is the legal model of choice for sex workers and those who advocate for their rights. It allows for access to human rights protections, including delivery of gender equality and the ability to achieve labour protections; it
