World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day provides us with an opportunity for reflection – to remember those who we have lost and to look forward, to consider what still needs to be done if we are to tackle HIV. In terms of scientific advances and political commitment this year has been a very mixed bag.

This World AIDS day feels different to all others.  It has felt like the end of AIDS is in sight for some time now but after 30 years with so much hope and so many false alarms the wise have learned not to get excited by each announcement and slogan.

The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’. According to a press release by the World AIDS Campaign the theme has been chosen to address the critical need to protect human rights and attain access for all to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. It also acts as a call to countries to remove laws that discriminate against people living with HIV, women and marginalized groups.
